Abstract

Child and adolescent psychiatry has specific symptom presentation, largely caused by development and high dependence on environmental factors. Therefore diagnostic procedures and classification in child and adolescent psychiatry must recognize this uniqueness and develop an approach that will be person-oriented rather than diagnosis. Presence of comorbidity in developmental psychiatry is more rule than coincidence. The most studied Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD has significant comorbidity with conduct disorder, depression and anxiety. Prevalence of comorbid mental disorders in children with mental retardation is high and ranges from 25-70%, depending on the methodology, diagnostic definitions and the investigated population. Autism Spectrum Disorder is often associated with mental retardation, ADHD, tics, gastrointestinal disorders, schizophrenia. Early onset schizophrenia often coexist with ADHD, conduct disorders, depression. Recognition of comorbidity facilitates the choice of therapy and has great influence on the prognosis and outcome of mental health problems in children and adolescents.
