Turning point in the curriculum for physical training of lower grade elementary school pupils

Abstract

The broad curriculum which has existed so far, with its objective for 'versatile' man, could not essentially affect the realisation of elementary objectives of physical education of pupils in the lower grades of elementary school. A great mistake was made in the curriculum by the substitution of theses, since the 'teaching contents' (varied motoric activities) is only a means of physical education, used in achieving the set objectives, as human values to be achieved, and the development of the pupil's abilities (motoric efficiency), and not the 'curriculum matter' that experts have to 'perform' and 'practice to perfection'. This means that the lower grade pupil should be set as a subject of the process of education, not as a means of physical training. Therefore it is necessary in planning and programming to conform to the set objectives for the particular age and then choose the means by which this objective will be achieved, in a greater number of classes of physical exercise as well as in other organised forms of work in the physical education of lower grade elementary school pupils.
