Importance of fertility and quality of soil substrates for greenhouse vegetable production

Abstract
In greenhouse vegetable production in Serbia plants are most often grown on the soil substrate on which the greenhouse is built. Considering that greenhouse vegetable production is highly intensive and costly, the quality of soil substrate becomes of vital importance for success of the production process. The root system of plants grown in a greenhouse has some anatomical particularities that influence nutrient uptake. Optimal soil structure and composition, pH value of soil solution, climatic and biotic factors and quality of irrigation water have to be carefully analyzed before and during the growth process. This paper also shows examples of the results of analyzes of greenhouse soil substrates around Kikinda, with special emphasis on the importance of pH and the avoidance of soil salinization, compacting and bogging.
