Multiresistant bacterial isolates in University Clinical Centre of the Republic of Srpska

Abstract

Objective. The objective of this study was to determine the resistance and multi-drug resistance of clinical isolates on Surgical, Internal and Gynaecological clinic and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the University Clinical Center (UCC) of the Republic Srpska in the period from January to December 2015. Methods. To obtain relevant data on bacterial isolates and resistance the retrograde analysis of the laboratory documentation for the specified period of time was used. Statistical analysis was done by using the SPSS software package, along with the level of statistical significance of 5% (α=0.05). Results. There was a highly statistically significant difference in resistance of isolated bacteria to more classes of antibiotic between different species of bacteria and hospital wards (p<0.001). In the total sample of multi-drug resistant isolates (678) the most common isolated bacteria were Acinetobacter spp. (46.8%), followed by Pseudomonas spp. (16.4%), Klebsiella/Enterobacter spp. (14.2%), Escherichia coli (5.6%), Enterococcus spp. (4.9%), Staphylococcus aureus (4.4%), S. epidermidis (3.1%), and Serratia marcescens (1%). The largest number of multi-drug resistant bacteria were isolated at the ICU (p<0.001). Conclusion. There is a high prevalence of multidrug resistance Acinetobacter spp. in this study. The isolates from the ICU were more resistant than the isolates originating from Surgical, Internal and Gynaecological clinic.
