Viral hepatitis A is a fecal-oral infection, belonging to a group of intestinal diseases, known from ancient times. It is especially frequent in underdeveloped countries. To analyze epidemiological situation of viral hepatitis A in Belgrade during the period from 1988 to 2002, we have used the data from the report on intestinal diseases, annual reports on prevention, control and elimination of intestinal diseases in Belgrade, Registry of outbreaks and results of epidemiological explorations. In (he above period, we registered 4.941 cases of viral hepatitis A in Belgrade, with an average annual morbidity rate of 19.6 per 100,000 populations. Annual morbidity oscillated from 39.4 cases per 100.000 populations (in 1988) to 5.3 cases per 100,000 populations (in 2001). According to age, highest number of cases (1,483 or 30.0%) belongs to the 7-14 age group. A total number of 2,997 (60.7%) patients have been registered throughout the year, with the majority of cases in autumn and at the beginning of winter, i.e. from September to January. Out of those 305 outbreaks of intestinal diseases. 10.2 % (31) have been ascribed to viral hepatitis A. In the outskirts of the city we have registered 1 1 (35.5%) outbreaks; 9 (29.0%) of them in special institutions for mentally handicapped children; 8(25.8%) of them in schools and pre- school facilities; 2(6.5%) in families and 1 (3.2%) in other types of facilities. Close contact has been the major way of transmission of hepatitis A virus in outbreaks in 87.1 % (27) instances.
