Parental emotional competence, access to children's emotions and dimensions of children's temperament

Gender differences in emotional competence of parents and parental access to children's emotions, were examined. We tried to give an answer can we predict the parental access to children's emotions, based on the child's temperament and emotional competence of parents. The study included 359 parents whose children attended a kindergarten in Zagreb, 186 mothers and 173 fathers. Statistically significant gender differences in emotional competence of the parents were found. Mothers statistically significantly more successful recognize and understand the emotions and they have a better ability to express emotions and appointments, as compared to the fathers. Statistically significant gender differences in approaches to children's emotions were found. Fathers are significantly more likely to belittle children's emotions, while the mothers often accept children's emotions. Emotional competencies and dimensions of children's temperament were not significant predictors of parental access to children's emotions (with the exception of emotional appreciation for fathers). Unsatisfactory reliability of the scale of parental access to children's emotions indicates the urgent need for improved instrument for measuring it.
