Didacticism and educativeness in children poems and stories by Stevan V. Popovic
University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Education in Sombor
Keywords: Stevan V. Popovic; literature for children; collected works for children; poem; story; didacticism; narrative teaching unit
Abstract
Stevan V. Popovic (1845-1918) has an outstanding place in Serbian 19th century literature for children. He wrote poems as well as stories. However, his greatest contribution lies in collecting and publishing collected works for children. He was the first in Serbian children literature to edit the collected poems Poem Sequence (Pest, 1872), and to found a library named Children World. After that, he published several collected works of mixed character that included poems, stories, and different prose essays, as well as works from folk literature. His children stories are characterized by didacticism. These often represent narrative teaching units by which Stevan V. Popovic entered into the system of education. His prose works often provide children with direct instructions suggestively given in a very simple manner accompanied by evident examples. Edifying and didactical element was not only the characteristic of Popovic's prose writing; this was an emphasized characteristic of other writers of children literature at that time.
