Advisory-educational work in school and prevention of violence

Abstract

In order to reduce violent behaviour, the role of school counselors is to act preventively on the occurrence of violence with their advisory and educational work. It is necessary to nurture prosocial culture in schools, as opposed to the culture of freedom without boundaries. The objective of this research is show if there is aggressiveness represented in adolescents, that is, defiance and confrontation, disorders in behaviour, if students are victims or bullies, as well as their relationship with school counselors. An aggression scale for children and adolescents (SNOP) that measures the respresentation of aggressive behaviour was used. The sample comprises 290 adolescents, students of all grades in secondary school. The results indicated that students manifest a low level of aggressiveness, that they are not bullies and victims and that they do not have a disorder in behaviour. It was shown that defiance and confrontation were the most represented. Students who manifest a higher level of defiance and confronation are more often invited for an advisory talk, but they themselves rarely visit school counselor. Students with a higher level of violent behaviour and disorder in behaviour, as well as victims, are also more often invited for an advisory talk. A higher level of aggressiveness is manifested by the students who do not address school counselors for help. School achievement and gender are not predictors of a relationship with school counselors. The significance of this research is reflected in the building of a positive, cooperative relationship between students and school counselors as advisors and indicating a need for researching this area.
