School anxiety and school phobia as developmental disturbances and disorders

Abstract

Purpose of this paper is to examine disturbances and disorders, which are in scientific literature classified as school anxiety and school phobia, of lower primary grades children. Achieving this purpose requires defining concepts of "school anxiety" and "school phobia", and construction of a valid differentially diagnostic test (or technique) for measuring intensity or the type of disorder, its cause (realistic or fictive), as well as a possible prognosis, and finally ways to reduce or eliminate disturbances and disorders. This paper is a part of a larger project of Faculty of Defectology in Belgrade (Phenomenology of developmental disturbances and disorders of preschool and school children, 2002/2005., under the guidance of dr. Slavica Golubović). General purpose of this project is to create a battery of tests for screening of disturbances and disorders of children. This battery should be of great practical value and use for contemporary defectologists in practice, in quick, efficient and relatively correct diagnosis of developmental disturbances and disorders, and preparation of children with some sort of disturbance for, so called processual diagnostics.
