Values and social changes: A replication of a research into the pupils' expectations of their future profession
University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philosophy

Abstract

In a former research into the effects of elementary school education we have investigated, among other things, what eight grade elementary school pupils expect of their future profession. The pupils' 'expectation of their future profession' was put into a context in which a selection of twelve values or value orientations was made. The research was repeated five years later with a view to find out whether the values the pupils want to achieve in their future profession have been affected by social changes, which had taken place in the meantime. By comparing the results of the new research (conducted in 1994) with the results of the former research (conducted in 1989) we have seen that the distribution of weight assigned to various expectations of future professions are very similar in both researches. The importance of cooperation, advanced training and security have ranked highest in both researches. Some minor differences, which have been found to be statistically significant, have shown that less importance is attached to the help extended to other people and to social justice, while high incomes and popularity in the mass media have come to count more by pupils now. Even though no substantive changes have been found, we assume that the researches indicate the direction in which the adolescents' value system is changing under the influence of the social environment.
