The authors examined types of psychic reaction to permanent physical disability as the result of war trauma, and their correlation with the structure of the examinees' personality. The sample covered 30 examinees who had lost an extremity and were waiting for protheses to be made. Their psychic state was evaluated along with their personality traits and degree of depression. The investigation used a semi-standardized clinical interview, the MCMI (Milon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory), the BDI (Beck Depression Inventory) and the BHS (Beck Hopelessness Scale). Results indicate a lack of current psychiatric disorders and the domination of narcissistic defenses, and are understood as one of the phases in reacting to permanent physical disability. The specific features of such reactions are determined by the specific features of the trauma itself and the dynamics of the homogenous group in which examinations took place. The authors also point out the need for further psychiatric monitoring of this population of examinees.
