Success in teaching and empathy of teachers

Abstract

Success of the teaching process is a multidimensional construct so that evaluation of success of the teaching process and teachers is multi-dimensional and complex. Success of teachers was measured according to different criteria and measures (self-evaluation of overall success self-evaluation of role realization, evaluation of overall success by students, evaluation of teacher's role realization by students, motivation of students for the subject (course) as an indicator of the influence of teacher over student, average academic achievement) for which special instruments have been prepared. The relationship of teacher's success and empathy measured by the index of interpersonal reactivity was analyzed. The study covered 120 teachers and 3428 elementary and high school students. The results confirm that the level of teacher's empathy correlates with some but not all parameters of success. The affective component of empathy is in positive correlation with affective and some motivational indices of success and evaluations by the students, while the cognitive components correlate with self-evaluation of teachers.
