Self-efficacy assessment and students' achievements in studying English

Abstract

Self-efficacy relates to the awareness which a person has about their own powers to start and finish particular tasks. The awareness will influence behaviour and affective states regarding the selection of the tasks or problems the individual has to face, belief in success, and persistence in problem-solving. The results of numerous researches confirm that there is relatedness between the students' self-confidence and the success they achieve in the classroom, but few were dedicated to examine these factors in the framework of studying a foreign language. The aim was to determine whether there is relatedness between the student's level of self efficacy and academic success in learning English. The paper offers the results of a research focused on determining self efficacy as a factor of achievement in studying the English language. The sample included 87 students who studied English as the optional second language. The data about the examined variable were gathered before and after testing their knowledge in English. The measuring instrument is a version of the CASES (College Academic Self-efficacy Scale) which was modified to measure self-efficacy in learning English. The relatedness between the success in learning English and self-efficacy assessment after testing was established. Accordingly, prior personal experience appears to be a significant predictor of the respondent's trust in their capabilities. The survey results are also analyzed from the viewpoint of practical implications for teaching practice.
