Socio-experiential determinants of self-understanding of youth during social crisis

Abstract

The paper is a sequence of extensive empirical research of social-psychological correlations of value orientation in youth during social crisis, where self-understanding was researched in addition to other values in the field of individual life of the youth (national, religious utilitarian, hedonistic, esthetic, etc). The research was performed on the sample of 252 students of 3rd and 4th-year secondary school in Mostar, tested immediately before the beginningend of civil war in Herzegovina, and on 252 students of 3rd and 4th year secondary school in Trebinje immediately after the end of the war. The research was done by means of a questionnaire on social-ranking characteristics of the students and a stansardised self-understanding scale. The scale of Likert's type, whose coefficient of reliability is determined by Split-half method on 504 students at the age of adolescence, amounted to 0,68. Research results showed that self-understanding of youth is correlated with significant number of social-experience characteristics of the students.
