Contribution of after school educational activities in planetarium to the improvement of quality of astronomical education in teaching geography and physics

Abstract

In the paper, we are analysing possibilities of development astronomical education through application of planetarium in pedagogy, deeper connection of pedagogical praxis in the planetarium, socio-constructivist theory of learning and contemporary concepts of quality in education. The aim of the research is determination of the significance and basic characteristics of learning and teaching in after school educational activates in the planetarium (VOAP) functioning in realisation of astronomy contents in teaching geography and physics. The aim of the research is to determine critical variables according to which we can describe influence of learning in planetarium on development of astronomical education and quality of teaching geography and physics. In the Reserch, there were 811 students of the sixth grade and 152 geography and physics teachers from primary schools in Serbia. The conducted research led to the empirical acknowledgement that in the teaching practice, VOAP is very rarely used; verbal methods are more often used in school praxis and in VOAP, we are often applying methods of demonstrating and practical activities of students at school. VOAP contributes to improving teaching improvement of geography and physics; students who participated in VOAP have better achievements at the knowledge test in astronomy than those who only participated in school classes and they show a greater degree of satisfaction with the process of learning. Socio-constructivists' potentials of planetarium were described and advantages and limitations of the application of VOAP were determined.
