Abstract

This article examines the actuality of Scheller's personalistic anthropology and his view that spirituality is the essence of human personality. We start by presenting Heidegger's critique of Scheller's personalism, which includes the argument that this personalistic anthropology is traditionalistic, and as such - outdated. We present counterarguments to Heidegger's critique and show that it is not justified. This is followed by a detailed discussion on Scheller's anthropological and personalistic standpoint by the clarification of its phenomenological background and the role of theistic motifs in his philosophical theory. Special attention is being paid to examining the meaning spirituality by explaining its three aspects - free will, unpragmatic knowledge and selflessness. In the last segment of the article we show that Scheller's personalistic anthropology communicates effectively with the temptations of modern man in his aspirations to be an authentic person. Scheller's ideas are associated with the analysis made by some of the best diagnosticians of our time, through his advocacy of the thesis that in modern society spiritual autonomy is a key requirement for authentic personality.
