Effect of soil mulching on soil surface temperature
University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Agriculture, Serbia
Abstract
Testing were carried out at Faculty of Agriculture Novi Sad. Nine different plastic films for ground covering were used. The tested materials were different in sense of thickens, color and quality. The aim of this research was to analyze temperature conditions on ground surface in water-melon production. Average minimal soil daily temperature, measured for uncovered soil (control treatment) was 23.63°C. Increasing of average soil daily temperature under plastic film, compared with uncovered soil varied in interval 4.01 up to 4.64°C. Temperature regime in conditions of ground covering in early morning hours (6 00-630) and in midday hours (13 30-1400) were analyzed. Measuring were carried out in two time-cycles (03-07.06.2002. and 17-19.06.2002. In condition of ground covering in morning hours, higher temperatures were measured under plastic films than those measured on bare soil. In first measuring period temperature increasing were in range of 0.48 up to 1.48°C, and in second this range was 0.92 up to 4.87°C. During midday measuring intervals, under plastic films, higher soil temperatures were observed, from 8.04 up to 10.09°C in compare with uncovered ground. In the second measuring cycle, differences of temperature under film plastic and of bare ground were in range of 6.42 up to 13.51°C.
