Environmental aspects and choice of food packaging

Abstract
Packaging can be considered to be "necessary evil" of modern civilization as discarded after the use of packed food it ends at trash dumps as constant waste. The paper deals with packaging for food packing from the aspect of possible influence on the environment. "Ecological" criteria (ecological balance) and standard series JUS ISO 14000 were compared, as tools for choice of packaging, considering the strategy of sustainable development promoted in Rio-declaration. JUS ISO Guide 64 gives the connection between quality system and environmental protection system for the phase of standard and project preparation, so it can be applied for the choice of packaging. Taking ham cans, dietetic fruit products, bakery and frozen flour-based products as examples, the possible approach to packaging choice, considering the sustainable development strategy was presented, e.g. decision to use packaging with least negative effect on environment.
