The development of the feeling of identity, as of many other phenomena, is seen by psychoanalytic developmental psychology within the framework of genetic principles offering the possibility of reconstruction and extrapolation out of the analyzes of adults. Greatly important is the separation-individuation period in which the child can elaborate both the whole cognitive substructures and the fundamental affective schemes by which his later affectivity will be defined. The development of the feeling of identity passes through a series of phases as the 'sediments' of the real continuity of identity. Especially important in the developmental scale of the feeling of identity are the schemes of the steady object, of the representation of the absent object evocation and of the self- object differentiation.
