Esencijalna uloga selena i centralni nervni sistem

Sažetak
Selen (Se) je esencijalni oligoelement neophodan u oksidoreduktivnim procesima u svih ćelija. Povezanosti deficita selena sa oboljenjem ljudi opisana je kroz epidemiološke entitete: Keshan bolest - endemsku kardiomiopatiju, Kashin-Beck juvenilnu osteoartropatiju i osteoporozu i razne forme hroničnih degenerativnih promena CNS-a. Deficit selena u lancu ishrane od zemljišta, preko jestivih biljaka, životinja i ljudi aktuelan je i u našem podneblju. Metabolizam selena u mozgu je značajno sporiji nego u drugim organima, a organske forme kao Se-metionin se deponuju se u mozgu u više nego neorganske. Rezultati više istraživanja govore da dodavanje ili restrikcija selena utiču na hormonsku aktivnost i na nivoe neurotransmitera te utiču na oblike raspoloženje i ponašanja kod ljudi i životinja. Pokazano je da se selen suprotstavlja neurotoksičnom dejstvu žive, kadmijuma i olova ali i uzrokuje njihovo nagomilavanje u mozgu u manje toksičnim formama. Efikasan način prevencije hiposelenemije sa povoljnim uticajem na nastanak tok i ishod hroničnih degenerativnih oboljenja bio bi povećanje unosa optimalizacijom ishrane, fortifikacijom namirnica ili i suplementacijom kontrolisanim preparatima sa osobinama pomoćnog lekovitog sredstva, gde se količina selena nalazi unutar preporučenih bezbednih doza, zbog mogućeg rizika od trovanja.
