Abstract
Since the second half of the XX century novel, as a genre, has occupied a prominent position in literature for children. Modern Serbian novel in literature for the youngest has been interpreted within the general progressive development of this genre in Serbian literature since the notion 'the days of novel' has come into use. The stated concise formulation reflects the dominant position this genre has and which has, by expressing its power and vitality, showed not only that it is constantly developing but that it is also able to satisfy the requirements set by the development of idea-aesthetic criteria of modern literature. Starting with the hypotheses that novel in literature for children should also be interpreted within the general development of this genre, not ignoring the characteristics of literary work for the youngest, the author has tried to point out with this paper to some of the possibilities of interpreting the road that Serbian literature for children has been going through, focusing on historical novels in literature for children.
