Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Poisons are substances that are by their character, amount or concentration harmful to the tissue. There are three types of poisoning: accidental, suicidal and homicidal AIM: To analyze cases of poisoning during two years, in which was called emergency, and to determine incidence, method and means of poisoning MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of Emergency medical records in Subotica during 2013/2014 RESULTS: During 24 months there were 570 calls to the Emergency related to poisoning. Incidence was higher in 2013 by third. Men were slightly more represented (378 - 66, 3%) and there was no age difference between victims in 30s and 50s. Most frequent method was taking poison by swallowing (90%), succeeding was intravenous poisoning (2, 1%) Most frequent poisoning substance was alcohol, in 55, 1 % of cases, followed by sedatives, in 27% of cases. There were 2 cases (0, 8%) of poisoning by hydrochloric acid, single case of poisoning by antifreeze and insecticide, and four by pesticide. Poisoning was suicidal in 202 cases (36, 7%), accidental in 13 cases (2, 3%), and overdose drug taking in 14 (2, 4%). Almost all victims were transported to hospital (97%), with adequate therapy during transport (16, 5 %). In two cases outcome was fatal (0, 8%) and in several cases hemodynamic instability was noted (4, 2%) CONCLUSION: Poisoning is more common today than in past. The key for successful help and prevention is quick reaction, good anamnesis and knowing of social aspects in affected region.
