The author is dealing with the relationship of superstition and intolerance towards suicide in the course of the history. The relation of society to suicide was changing from tolerance, respect, glorification to underestimation and rejection on the part of religion and the law. Superstition remained in the background of some negative relations to suicide. The equalization of suicide and homicide in Western civilization originated from the connection of superstition and primitive fear with the sins in the Christian sense of the word. The negative attitude towards suicide persisted to the present day though the reactions became much milder.
