Abstract
Intensity of soil compaction is determined by cone resistance and bulk density. This paper presents the results of soil compaction analysis performed at 8 locations where organic farming is practiced. Cone resistance ranged from 0.92 to 1.54 MPa in the ploughed layers from 0 to 30 cm at the investigated plots, and the highest value of cone resistance, 2.82 MPa, was obtained in Bajmok on the pear tree plot. Cone resistance values in the sub-ploughed layers ranged from 2.32 to 3.16 MPa. Some locations had low soil moisture at the time of sampling (Orom, Kelebija, Tamiš and Bajmok) while others had higher values that were more suitable for tillage (Kisač, Totovo selo, Crepaja and Ljutovo). The lowest soil moisture was measured in Bajmok and it amounted about 11% while the highest values of soil moisture, about 27%, were measured in Ljutovo and Kisač. Bulk density was not high in the ploughed layer from 0 to 30 cm and it ranged from 1.08 to 1.37 Mg m-3 at the investigated plots. This could be explained by the fact that organic material, i.e. manure, was applied. Typical values of bulk density in the compacted soil range from 1.4 to 1.6 Mg m-3. In the sub-ploughed layer bulk density can range from 1.22 to 1.52 Mg m-3. Soil moisture did not affect the bulk density, but it reduced the cone resistance. The interdependence between cone resistance and soil moisture showed downward trend, that is, low soil moisture values led to an increase in the cone resistance. On the other hand, increased cone resistance led to an increase in the bulk density for both investigated depths. Mathematical equations are provided for both cases.
