Effects of tires on tractor traction performance

Abstract
Most farming operations in agriculture are performed by using tractor towed implements, which suggests the importance of investigating the efficiency from the aspect of drawbar power. Tractor should be operated in the way that its engine power is used maximally providing high quality and low cost operations. The key objective of food production process is to increase yield and reduce the costs per unit product. In this respect, besides numerous factors which affect the work quality and production costs, the condition of tractor tires is another factor which is analyzed in this paper. Friction between tires and contact surface inevitably results in the wearing of tractor tires which changes their dimensions and influences greatly the tractor traction characteristics. The efficiency was assessed by using the tractor power related parameters: drawbar force, drawbar power, slippage, hourly fuel consumption, specific fuel consumption and actual velocity. The research results proved that a tractor with new tires has better traction characteristics. Old tires have considerable negative effects on tractor traction characteristics by causing greater fuel consumption and poor traction characteristics. Purchase of new tires certainly represents one of the more significant costs that every agricultural household has. However, timely replacement of tires can ensure that a tractor has better traction characteristics and lower fuel consumption, which consequently results in better farming operations.
