The city, spectacle and identity
University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philosophy
Abstract
In this article the city and the spectacle are defined in various ways, their specifies are given along with diachronic analysis of their intertwined social junction. The modern city is defined as a 'spectacle of consumption and the consumption of spectacle' (Jean Baudrillard), as a site of two existential human needs: Homo economicus and Homo ludens. The city's cultural identity is defined as a specific city's self-consciousness developed through history and in relation with other cities. The urban culture and art, including spectacle, play and festivities, may be an agency, simultaneously universal and concrete, equally filled with the past and open to the present and oriented towards the future. It can constitute city's cultural identity as multiculturalist identity, in which particular cultures would not be denied, but in which, on the contrary, their specific features would be accentuated as interesting, attractive and enriching.
