Wahhabism and its breakthrough to the Balkans
University of Belgrade, Faculty of Security Studies, Serbia
Keywords: Wahhabism; Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab; Saudi Arabia; wahhabists; the Balkans; terrorism
Abstract
Money is the main means of wahhabists to spread their ideology and influence. It is known that, after the end of the civil war, there has been an ever-increasing influence of Islamic countries, in particular Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia, in areas such as economy, politics, education, and religion. Although Saudi Arabia and Iran significantly helped Bosnian Muslims during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey however has the biggest influence within Muslim communities in the Balkans and makes all kinds of efforts to maintain the primacy as their most reliable ally, wherein it also has international political support. Despite the great influence of Turkey in the Balkans, the significance of wahhabists and the spread of their influence in this area should not be underestimated. Foreign Affairs Minister of Israel Avigdor Lieberman, who said al Qaeda and other Islamic extremist groups were trying to establish bases in the Balkans, also pointed to the threat posed by wahhabists. The presence of wahhabists in Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina poses the greatest danger to the stability of the Balkans.
