Predictive factors for successful treatment of diabetes type 2 at the special hospital 'Merkur' in Vrnjci Spa

Abstract
Objective. The aim of this work is to analyze the success in treating people with diabetes mellitus type 2 during a 10- day stay within a program of education and complications prevention as well as to analyze the predictive factors which influence the outcome. Methods. The research included 126 adult patients (both genders) who were treated for 10 days from January to May, 2012. Parameters by which patients were divided in group A (improvement) and group B (without improvement) were: actual glycemia values in initial (1st day) and final (9th day) profiles, the mean glycemia values in the profile and glycemia variability. Results. In group A the mean value during the first profile for MBG was 9.73±2.81 mmol/L, for MAGE 2.22±1.47mmol/L. The final profile values for MBG were 7.79±1.99 mmol/L, and for MAGE 1.52±0.73mmol/L. In group B the mean value during the first profile for MBG was 7.48±1.86 mmol/L and for MAGE 1.72±0.84mmol/L, and the final profile MBG was 8.04±2.28 mmol/L and MAGE was 1.96±1.06mmol/L. There was a statistically significant difference in the observed groups for MAGE values at both profiles and MBG values during the first profile. The model containing three variables (7 a.m. glycaemia, MBG in 1st profile, BMI) showed the best predictive value of successful treatment and rehabilitation. The increase of MBG for 1 mmol/L increased odds for positive treatment outcomes ~3 times. Conclusion. The program of education and prevention of complications of diabetes mellitus type 2 within a balneoclimatological health center is an effective method of treatment of this disease in a short-term period. Further research is needed to determine long-term benefits of preventive and therapeutic measures.
