Abstract
This paper focuses on financial status of the Niš District economy, which at the end of 2007 included 3,328 companies with 43,947 employees. Comprehension of the financial status of this economy segment has caused brief presentation of the overall Serbian economy financial status. Analyzed data reveal that the economies of the Republic of Serbia and the Niš District are characterized by the following: increased number of companies, decreased number of employees, operating loss, accumulation of losses, ruining of financial structure, debt increase and increase of the missing long-term capital, followed by reduced surety and serious liquidity. From such essential features necessary priorities have been established, among which restoring of financial soundness is in the first place.
