Abstract
Biological diversity is a necessary prerequisite for survival and development of any population of living things. Preservation and protection of biological diversity in the nature provide basic living conditions, but illegal trafficking in endangered and rare wildlife species presents a grave threat to environmental security. The paper analyzes specific features of illegal trafficking in rare and endangered plant and animal species, focusing in particular on the analysis of illegal trafficking in the territory of Serbia. In order to ensure environmental security, prevention and suppression of illegal trafficking in rare and endangered species of plants and animals have been dealt with within the international Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
