Horizons of "the Norma" of Avram Mrazović

The 240th anniversary of the founding of the Norma 1778-2018 occurs in the same time as another important event - the centenary of the end of the Great War followed by the unification of this territories to the Kingdom of Serbia and creation of the new Yugoslav state. It seems that co-occurrence of the events may render each of the events as gaining less importance. In scholarly and essayistic way we intend to show the continuity of the historical processes which connect these two crucial events. Liberation and national unification accomplished in 1918 represent a particular end of the process of development of the national idea. The main feature of this process was education and its institutional development. Sombor, i.e., its inhabitants were the representatives of barely noted, but overly present in the cultural development of Serbian identity who readily persevered the numerous temptations and successfully contributed to the accomplishment of the national program. The initiator of this process was Avram Mrazović, and it was in that moment that he founded the teachers' course. Accepting and properly interpreting the efforts made by Orthodox Church, Mrazović commenced with the establishment of the enlightenment school. The idea that started with doubt has acquired much-wanted support, and Serbs have gained a chance to define themselves in more contemporary terms. The word "teacher" was a synonym for this process. The development went through adaptation but also through authoritarian imposition. Philanthropy, however, he never renounced. Interpretation of historical events in this work is presented in a retrospective form, which we think will, to certain extent offer insight into our available knowledge about the teachers and the history of education of Serbs "Prečani".
