Sažetak
Prošlost Velikog rata 1914–1918, aktuelna u godinama obeležavanja njegove stogodišnjice, više nego ikada obogaćena je istraživanjima čiji cilj nisu samo rasvetljavanja vojno-političkih događaja. Sve više stručna javnost, ali i zainteresovani građani u prilici su da saznaju raznovrsni aspekt društvenih ideja i kreiranja nacionalnog identiteta. Ruska društvena misao je tokom 19. veka imala izuzetno kompleksan razvoj. Tragajući za sadržajem sopstvenog identiteta, Rusi su se i okretali zapadu u nadi da će im ponuditi nešto novo, ali su pokušali i da na tradiciji okarakterišu i svoj autohtoni slovenofilski profil. Neosporno ogromno Carstvo omogućilo je isticanje specifične uloge Rusije u razvoju čovečanstva. Početkom 20. veka, ruska društvena misao kojom se država rukovodila pokušala je da sjedini hrišćanski univerzalizam i nacionalistički egoizam. Posledica toga bila je izrazita emotivnost nacionalne ideje koja se oslanjala na intuitivnost, specifičnu rusku ulogu i njen mesijanizam. Racionalno postavljeni tretman državnih interesa, iako prisutan u krajnjoj konsekvenci odluke, bio je obeležen saosećanjem. Ruski car Nikolaj Drugi, iako je vojno-politička i privredna situacija u zemlji ukazivala na nespremnost, stao je u odbranu “slovenske braće”. Ruski narod je podržao taj stav, a nemački imperijalizam je računao na to jer se i sam rukovodio “tevtonskom dominacijom”.
