Abstract
The paper deals with the issue of poor coverage of writing skills in the English curricula at the Faculties of Technology in Serbia, and the levels of knowledge necessary to future technologists for writing in English. The introductory part offers some definitions of the writing skill as one of the cognitive processes and an analysis of the writing needs of students in the framework of English for Technology. The subject of the empirical study was to examine the representation of writing skills in the English language curriculum for students of technology, their attitudes about the importance of language skills and, finally, test their current level of knowledge of the writing skills in English. In order to collect data we used a questionnaire with multiple choice questions. The second measuring instrument that was used for the purpose of this study was to test the knowledge of writing, i.e. forms of professional writing: report, business letter and resume, which the needs analysis identified as the most important for future tech nologists. The results show that the training of the writing skills in the teaching process of technological universities in Serbia is extremely weak and the current level of knowledge is at a lower level than the level required for future technologists. The correlation analysis revealed interrelatedness between the amount of training in writing skills and the knowledge of writing in English, as had been expected.
