Abstract
Potassium is an essential nutrient. It is the most abundant intracellular cation required for normal cellular membrane polarization, energy metabolism, electrolyte and fluid balance in human body. Disorder of potassium homeostasis results in cardiac, muscle and neurological disfunctioning. Dietary deficiency of potassium is uncommon due to it widespreaded occurence in food (mainly in food like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, dried beans, dairy products and freash meat). Adequate intake of potassium has been strongly associated with a reduced risk for hypertension, stroke and cardiovascular diseases. Scientific evidences based on epidemiological, clinical and and experimetal data strongly suggest that increased potassum consumption can atenuate the negative effects of high sodium intake on blood pressure. USA Academy of Science/Standing Committee on the Scientific Evaluation of Dietary Referens Intake recommeded intake of 4.7 g/day as an adequete potassium inteke from all sources. This quantity of potassium intake lowers blood pressure and atenuates adverse effects of sodium on blood pressure, kidney stones and bone loss. Evidences are based on results of meta analyses. Scientific Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies of the European Food Safety Authority suggested that potasium intake of 5-6g/day could be considered for the general population. This was based on scientific evidence that supplementation of an average of 3g/day over potasium content in consumed food, did not cause adverse effects(suppelments being in range of 1-5 g/day since indivials react differently on increased potassium intake through supplementation).
