Effect of Azotobacter chroococcum application in sugar beet

In previous studies of Azotobacter choococcum effects on sugar beet production characteristics the bacterium was applied to the soil by seed inoculation. In the present study, in order to avoid the negative influence of fungicides the seed is treated with, Azotobacter was applied by soil treatment just before sowing accompanied by simultaneous incorporation. Used as the microbiological fertilizer was a mixture of three Azotobacter choococcum strains (5, 8 and 14) extracted from sugar beet rhizosphere that had in our previous studies proven to associate well with sugar beet. A suspension containing a mixture of the three strains at 109/cm3 density was used at 14 1/ha. Delta, Lara, and Crvenka mz were the three cultivars used in the experiment, which was carried out during 2001 and 2002 at the Novi Sad and Sombor locations. The use of Azotobacter increased the root sugar content of all three cultivars in both study years at both sites. Azotobacter also had a positive influence on sugar beet technological characteristics, which increased the sugar utilization percentage. The increased root yields and sugar content and improved technological properties resulted in significantly higher yields in both locations. The average increase of sugar yield relative to the check treatment was 0.38 t/ha at Novi Sad and 0.49 t/ha at Sombor.
