The origin of the strong verbs of the sixth and seventh class in Old English
O poreklu jakih glagola šeste i sedme klase u staroengleskom
nema
Abstract
The paper considers some attempts of the reconstruction of vocalism in verbal stems of the Germanic strong verbs belonging to the sixth and the seventh class. There are a few different hypotheses aimed at the reconstruction of Proto-Indoeuropean and Proto-Germanic vocalism in verbal stems of the Old English strong verbs, especially in regard to the verbs belonging to the seventh class, but, although some of these hypotheses are more probable than others, none can be proven beyond the shadow of a doubt due to the lack of written records from the Proto-Indoeuropean and Proto-Germanic epoch. The paper comprises an overview of some of these hypotheses.
