Protection of steel by waterborne coatings

Abstract
Many currently used anticorrosive coatings are not environmentally friendly because of their solvent emissions in the air. There is need for substitutes (or alternative techniques) which would at the same time provide, good corrosion protection and be environmentally acceptable. To achieve this, a lot of research has been conducted in order to find the right formulation. One of the most interesting developments in the creation of new and environmentally friendly anticorrosion paints are waterborne coatings with low VOC and without toxic (chromium and lead) components, which are expected to protect metals in different types of environments. In this work, corrosion protection properties of waterborne epoxy coatings are determined using the electrochemical techniques. Accelerated testing in the QUV chamber are carried out too. Test results and evaluation of corrosion protection properties of waterborne epoxy coatings show their good corrosion resistance. They can be used for many practical applications in industry.
