On the learning ability test as situation test in the school selection of candidates
Vojna akademija KoV, Beograd
Keywords: test sposobnosti za učenje; situacioni testovi; selekcija kandidata
Abstract
Starting from the definition of learning as a 'rather lasting and progressive change in the individual's behavior due to his former activity' the author tried to prove in theory and by experiments that the learning ability test can be used as situation test in the school selection of candidates, enabling us to anticipate whether the candidates will be well- adjusted and efficient at school. The test has been constructed as a learning situation so as to include several of the candidates' cognitive and conative characteristics. The learning material has been selected so as to include the candidates' motivation for school and their after school activities. The knowledge test is, like all the other intelligence tests, based on neogenetic laws underlying the eduction of correlates and relations. The instructions given to respondents, the interviewer's behavior and the way in which the knowledge test is answered highlight the candidates' personality traits: their emotional stability, the type of their nervous system and their anxiety in test situations. The answers obtained from 3000 respondents have shown that the learning ability test is a valid motivation, cognitive and conative test for diagnostic purposes as well as a valid cognitive and conative test for prognostic purposes, if compared to the ability tests generally used. It has been proved empirically that the learning ability test is more valid by a great deal than figural ability tests. However, it reflects the biological intelligence rather than cultural influences, the learning ability test being 'free from former experiences.' The construction of the learning ability test is rather simple (if compared to classical ability tests) and can be recommended alongside the candidates' former school performance in test batteries aimed at selecting candidates in professional schools. The learning ability tests can be supplemented so as to include also the candidates' special motivation, cognitive and conative personality traits in view of the specific requirements set by school and the profession for which the selection is made.
