Abstract
The prose of Serbian realists is rich in contents that uphold the cultural pattern of a patriarchal community and the subordinate position of an individual living within. The subject matter of patriarchal family is dominant in the prose of Laza Lazarević who insists on depicting conflicts stemming from distinctive psychological problems of individual people inside a community. This paper emphasizes the author's artistic picture of female searching for identity and also deviation from stereotypic shaping of female characters. The introductory part of the paper presents a short review of a patriarchal cultural pattern of the writer's time and the position of individuals inside the community. The central part consists of the female characters' analysis in short stories "at the Well" and "The School Icon". The final section of the paper interprets the author's orientation towards final solutions in which we see heroines who, in spite of the initial conflict, continue their lives in accordance with the community norms.
