Abstract
The paper describes epidemiological characteristics of leptospirosis in the Belgrade for the period 2005–2014. Descriptive epidemiological study was applied in the survey. The crude and age specific incidence rates were used in analyzing the data. According to the annual report regarding the work in the prevention, combating and elimination of infectious diseases, in the past decade a total of 33 persons have been affected by leptospirosis. The highest average agespecific incidence rates for leptospirosis were registered in the age group 60–69 years (0.5 per 100,000 population). Ratio of male to female cases was 5,6:1. Peak occurrence of leptospirosis was in August (24.2% of all cases). The average incidence rate for leptospirosis for urban municipalities of Belgrade was 0.2 per 100,000 inhabitants and for rural municipalities was 0.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. The most commonly isolated leptospira in patients was L. icterohaemorrhagiae (15.8%). In more than threequarters of the patients have determined the presence of one or more risk for infection of leptospirosis. It is estimated that the actual number of patients suffering from leptospirosis in the Belgrade larger and the report includes only the more severe forms of the disease. There is a possibility of underreporting because the milder forms of the disease are not laboratory research and may remain unrecognized. Prevention of leptospirosis requires a multidisciplinary approach, continuous engagement and cooperation of veterinary and health services.
