Abstract
Alfalfa beetle (Phytodecta fornicata ) is one of the most important alfalfa pests. It has one generation per year and overwinters as adult. Damage make both, adults and larvae, by chewing leaves, leaf buds and stems. Larvae cause more damage, as they are more abundant. The yield of first mowing often decreases for 30-50% or even more. Important cultural practice is space isolation between old and new alfalfa fields which contributes to delay in colonization of different pests (including alfalfa beetle) on new alfalfa fields. Earlier first mowing and quick haymaking decreases damage from this pest. Economic treshold for P. fornicate in the begining of leafing is five or more adults per m2 and 20 or more adults/m2 when crop is 10-15 cm high. Alfalfa lady bird beetle (Subcoccinella vigintiquatuorpunctata) belongs to important pests of alfalfa and clover, especially in humid areas. It has two to three generations per year and overwinters as adult. Adults and larvae cause characteristic damage, particularly to second and third mowing. The yield of leaf mass can decrease to 40-60%, but significant damage can be done to seed production, as well. Chemical control is rational if abundance of pest during the spring is over ten adults per m2, before oviposition.
